Are you ready for the wonders of technology? An email has been making it’s way around the travel offices, and inside is a link to one of the most beautiful interactive internet pages I’ve seen in a while. Recently, a couple of friends hiked up Lions Head in Cape Town during a full moon, a [...]
The Rains Transform Namibia
Its raining, its pouring… and all in the desert! Namibia is normally extremely dry. But once a year, with some luck, it may rain for a few short weeks. Those of you who have been to the Namib Rand Nature Reserve and to Sossusvlei will recognise the cinnamon coloured sand dunes. Can you imagine them [...]

ASC Photo of the Week – The African Landscape
As I’ve stated before in previous posts, I’m a huge fan of landscapes. Any landscape. But there is something about the African landscape that makes it more beautiful, lonely, and intriguing than any other. And all at the same time. This week, we have a beautiful shot from former African Safari Consultants’ client Alberto Benet. [...]

Newborn Gorilla Twins in Rwanda
Two healthy baby gorillas were born on Thursday, February 3, in the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. This is wonderful news for tourists and conservationists. Gorillas don’t often give birth to twins and as such, this is an extremely rare occasion. As you know, the Mountain Gorilla population is under threat and female gorillas usually have [...]

Hippos Underwater
Have you ever heard a hippo underwater? Probably not. Surprisingly, up to 80% of communication between hippopotamuses occurs while they are actually beneath the surface. A combination of squeals, grunts, and clicks, as well as the familiar wheeze-honk noise, makes up the hippos’ melodious underwater chatter. Click on the link below, courtesy of The Bushcamp [...]

ASC Pic of the Week – Itchy Leopard
It’s hard not to love all of the big 5, but there is something very unique about the leopard. This large, beautiful cat roams the savannah alone; and while it’s general demeanor lounging in the trees or playfully taunting its soon-to-be dinner might give off a sense of carefree laziness, leopards have a very real [...]

Feedback
Dear Ilze, We are home, safe and sound. You always called the trip “Your Fabulous African Journey”. And, you were right on. It was absolutely fabulous! A trip of a lifetime. We saw all the BIG 5, met wonderful people ( guides, waiters, cooks, transporters, etc.), ate great food and had an exciting time. The trip exceeded expectations, by a factor. Thank you for your work. I should have called you back to also thank you for getting my walker delivered that first night. My son took close to two thousand pictures. I’ll share the best with you after he sends me copies. My friends are jealous. Regards, Dave
Hi Liesl! Livingstone and the Riverclub were wonderful. Victoria Falls is one of the most breath-taking sites we've ever seen! No one minded getting a little wet and we got some fabulous photos. The market there was fun for the girls. The staff at the Riverclub were top notch! We really enjoyed getting to know everyone. The highlight there has to be the hippos - the sundowner boat trip was so fun, we did it both evenings. In Mombo, we got to see the leopard Legadima and her cub AND one of the white rhinos with her 3 week old baby! We were told that there hadn't been a rhino siting in a few months so we were thrilled. We're still going through our thousands of photos (we had 5 cameras between the 4 of us), re-living the fun! I know that Kevin and I will be looking to do a few more safari holidays while we're still in Africa. So, we may be in touch for help with that.. Here's wishing you all the best for the New Year! Thanks for all your help! Warmest Regards, Dana
Dear Jeff and Camille – So nice to get your holiday greeting and bad me for not ever writing “officially” to thank you both for the most amazing experience of my life – Simbambili and my safari experience. Your nose and ears must have been itching dozens upon dozens of times as I’ve recounted my adventure to friends and family and colleagues – and most recently, in our holiday letter. It still seems a bit like a dream…Funny, people have said things like, “Wow, now you can check that off your bucket list.” And I always reply, “Check it off?! Now I just want to go on safari again and again!” My time at Simbambili was life changing and life enhancing and there’s something about Africa that seems to have gotten under my skin. Guess that happens doesn’t it? Endless thanks to you both for helping to make my childhood dream come true! You guys rock! Happy holidays and all good things to you in the New Year ahead! Warmly, Melissa
Hi Ilze- Nicole and I are back in the US and wanted to thank you again for all the help that you gave us to make our trip truly fantastic! We're happy to give you some feedback on some places that stood out to us, as well as some learnings for future travelers. I'll also try to address your questions in the respective sections. Below is a quick summary: South AfricaZambia
- Cape Town accommodations were fine. Nothing "special" but we knew that going in. It was very comfortable, clean and convenient.
- The lodge in Franschhoek was really nice.
- The Elephant Lodge was a really nice location. Very unique and charming.
- You definitely warned us about the distance between all locations - we probably should of listened. While it was great to see the towns that we did, it was often after a long day of driving only to have to leave again first thing in the morning.
- All in all, the locations and lodges were all lovely in S. Africa.
Mozambique
- Everything was amazing! LOVED Islands of Siankaba.
Kenya
- We've already given feedback here. It was an amazing island. Beautiful, tranquil, etc.
- The Banguerra Lodge had a lot of potential. It was beautiful, the food was good.
Overall Feedback Aside from the above, we were very very happy with all the other elements of our trip (food, boarding, activities, transfers). That said, we thought we’d summarize some things that may have made our trip a bit more seamless so that you can pass along to future customers. Looking forward to connecting at your convenience. Thanks again for your help in planning a truly amazing, life changing trip. I hope the feedback above is helpful, and in the context that it was intended - which is that all in all, we are VERY happy. Have a great day. Colby
- We really loved the Stanley.
- Travel time between parks.
Unfortunately we are back. I could have stayed forever. I could easily live in South Africa. Loved every part of it. It was the perfect balance. Of course the safari was the crown jewel, followed by an instructive and inspiring day in Jo'burg and at the Apartheid Museum. Now I'm furiously trying to track down my habit -roiboos tea. Took over 1500 photos!!!! I could not imagine a more beautiful property than the Lions' Sands, and the safari experience was the best ever! And yes, our dinner with Liesl was delightful. We were brimful of enthusiasm then, and we had yet to go to the winelands, and safari and Jo'burg. Wish you could have joined us. But you can't be envious. You get to go there all the time. I'm the one who's envious. Will give you a call this week to gush some more. In the meantime thank you both for three weeks that went far too quickly and memories that will stay forever. Best, Gabriella
